September 2011:
It has been challenging as a dance teacher to make a decent living in my home of the Comox Valley. I have been on a sabbatical from teaching for several months now. During this time I have been asking myself how I can share my dance work and still be able to experience the fortune of making a living following my passion. In this time off I have chosen to include my other passion, Holistic Healing, that has been on hold for some time into my practice. So, I am pleased to be now offering bodywork and energy work, intuitive consulting and nutrition out of my home in Comox (although I am moving soon to Courtenay.) I will be teaching dance again soon, and I am still inquiring within myself what kind of dance it is I wish to teach and to whom (adults, children). I am looking for a place to teach out of; if you, reader, know of a place to rent that is suitable for sacred dance, please let me know! As well, eventually, I will wish to set up my healing bodywork practice outside of my home; so will require a space to do that, preferably with a team of body worker(s). In the meanwhile have a look at this beautiful dance video. \”Weightless\” by Erika Janunger I find the concept and the dance very inspiring and creative. Blessings. I welcome your comments. To your health! Jade
What is Contact Improvisation Dance?
Here is a little about CI dance:
So…. what is contact improv? Besides being fun, it is a moving meditation; a practice of being present and in the moment as you move in non-choreographed ways with another person. It can be slow and flowing, fast and flowing, move from high to low levels, it can take you upside down or it can remain peaceful and more of an energy (non- contact) dance. In my classes the age range is 8-75 years old… (could be older or younger I suppose). I offer contact dance technique and guided movement activities as well as time for reflection and check in with the group. The technique is mainly how to lift, how to listen as you dance, what to do or not do when you support someone else’s body, how to come off or onto another persons body (how to make it flow smoothly), falling with grace, safety tips and “rules”, varying your movement possibilities, and generally learning to free up and move in energy efficient, smooth ways so that it feels good and gives you energy. We also do improvisation and creative activities to open your mind a little more than you may be used to. Contact dance is a dance about relationship; you relate with yourself (paying attention to your self) and you relate to another (or maybe a group). The relationship asks you: do you like to support as much as you like to be supported? How much do you trust? Can you let yourself go? Can you say no? Can you stop and pause and go slow.. or can you let go and fall and fumble and be messy and silly? Lots of options!! It is a very unique form of movement and so it is a unique and open minded crowd. Improvisation means that you move as you are inspired to in the moment; for me it asks me to let go of limiting thoughts and judgments, IE: “aagh, what am I doing? I can’t do this.”… and instead decide to stay in my body, listen to my body as it is in physical contact with another body. Improvisation, for me, is very freeing – no body else and no choreography telling me what to do except my body wisdom and personal creativity (or maybe it is my soul that’s leading). Contact Improvisation dance is a freeing dance, it is non linear, it is physical and creative, it is fun and often funny. For me, after several years of practicing it, it is very satisfying. I invite you to come try. Maybe you know someone else who may enjoy it. I offer a fun, safe, contemplative and pure space for it to happen. The community of people doing it are awesome, open minded people who like to play, laugh and connect in deep and straight forward – (no confusing games) kind of ways…. so what are you waiting for… c u soon

dance for freedom: a poem from last nights dance out.
Sometimes I go out dancing to a party or to a bar. It’s getting to be bedtime (for me; I like to go to bed early when I can) and yet my spirit is up for some fun, movement and social interaction. If I were to write a poem inspired by a night this past weekend it might go like this… well it is going like this:
I swim in a sea of dancing bodies,
rhythm of this dj has just morphed out of the last one,
I dance in to my own heart’s decree, but he helps me, music man,
landing upon a carpet of melody the pain disipates,
the thoughts meadander into yesterday
I climb then onto my man’s back; asking for forgiveness of my age and meager past life story
hoping to bask in a moment of connection.
We rest in each others’ flower
as I uncurl from his breast I feel a
throb in my arm as someone spins a cartwheel catching me in the arm
brings me down to earth till I can have certainty again
open my eyes to watch the others dance.
one man spinning one woman,
one man off in his mind of dnace, somewhere,
sometimes beer gets in the way of the dance.
two women are in trance, eyes closed, breathing in their sensuality as goddesses
here on dance floor earth.
I go by a speaker and kiss it’s bass line as the tremor melts my diss-ease, causing me to smile and wriggle
with my own storyline.
Enter more people,
wait for the moment again to feel the invite of he and she and dj:
it’s a new dj,
Bennyreggae beats my blues
be gone now, you are not wanted blue boredom, judgement, fear, sadness, wariness,
All of these now are under restraining order.
Forgiveness.
We dance as sweat forms and cleanses us and a second wind graces us,
my legs are soar; the music calls me to move though.
this is my high, my drug, my almost number one love
to dance this is the dance, to be free, to be with me and be with thee,
I love this then,
better than bedtime early on this night,
all the muscles they let go; they are used up, they are formed and re-foremd with a flow that is not linear,
that is what she loves;
this artisitc flow that is a hang in terms of body shapes, hang, swing, stillness, waiting, forgiving,
remembering, breathe me, breathe me, I can lift my arms and open my heart, listen and smile within.
Thank you for this love, I am this love, I can let you be here with me, this is good for me.
The End – to begin again.
